China Olympic volleyball blocking-Lesson 1-Reach OVER the net

Look how far OVER the net these guys get.

The Chinese men volleyball players look like they formed their blocking wall even before Scott decided he wanted to attack the ball.

They take so much area away by reaching way over the net to block. The key is to penetrate over the net and reach into the opponents hitting area as much as possible without touching the net - as opposed to just jumping straight up in the air.

Using your outside hand to block the ball back into the court

This is an awesome AP Press photo captured the millisecond after USA Volleyball's Gabriel Gardner has blocked a ball by turning his outside hand in - pressing it towards the middle of the opposite side's court - while he is blocking - that way the hitter cannot use his hand to wipe off... that ball can only go straight back from where it came from - back into the hitter's court.
