Women’s African Olympic qualifications:The big favorites achieve first victory

Women’s African Olympic qualifications: Day 1

Alger, Algeria, January 23, 2008 - The big favorite teams the host Algeria and the African champions Kenya achieved their first victory in opening day of the 5 Nations Women’s African Olympic qualification tournament in the Algerian capital of Alger. The host team and the 2007 All Africa Games gold medalists Algeria started their competition by a big victory over Cameroon 3-0 in a repeated final that happened for the gold medal in the African Games.

The 2007 African champions and the continental representatives in the last years FIVB World Cup Kenya took over their opponent Senegal also in straight sets. The big favorites Algeria and Kenya will meet today in the competition second day while Cameroon meets South Africa as the champion of this five Nations tournament will have the African ticket in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
In the first match of the opening day the host team star studded with 4 European based players succeeded to take over Cameroon easier than expected 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-14) due to the skillful setting by Fatima Okazi and the usual spikes of Faiza Tsabet.

Cameroon team collected in Algeria in two groups from the European based professional and the local players couldn’t withstand the highly disciplined Algerian team.
The more experienced Kenyan players succeeded to overcome Senegal 3-0 (25-14, 25-9, 25-16) through the better block and the backline defense.
The African Olympic Qualification features five teams (Algeria, Kenya, Cameroon, Senegal and South Africa) competing for the lone African slot in the 2008 Olympic Games.
