Venezuelan women rally to defeat Peru 3-2 to go to the Beijing Olympics
(BEIJING, January 8) -- For Venezuelan volleyball fans, January 7 will go down in history as a day to remember. On this day, both the Venezuelan men's and women's volleyball teams earned qualification tickets to the Beijing Olympic Games by winning the final matches in their respective volleyball qualification tournaments for the South American region.
Just hours after the Venezuelan men's volleyball team downed Argentina in the men's qualification final in Formosa, Argentina, the Venezuelan women rallied to defeat host team Peru 3-2 (25-22, 25-27, 25-22, 22-25, 15-12) in the final round battle of the South-American Women's Olympic Qualification Tournament in Lima, Peru.
With Brazil previously qualifying for the Beijing Olympics through the World Cup, Peru was the next favorite to win the tournament.
Both Peru and Venezuela went into the final with a 3-0 win-loss record in the tournament. But in the end, it was the Venezuelan women who would overcome the Peruvian players for the victory and the sole South American ticket to the Beijing Olympics.
