So, once again summer is almost over.
On Tuesday, I go back to work. This will be my 6th season as a trauma nurse on the show "ER". My job as a trauma nurse is to assist the major characters (Noah, Mekhi, Goran, Sherry, Maura, Parminder, Shane) in the trauma scenes. (Trauma is when a medical emergency is brought in and is an immediate priority.) Since being there I've helped push, pull, pump, hold down, give IV, give blood, to all sorts of patients (guest stars and special guest stars). I give and get all the medical instruments the principals use in the trauma scenes.
When you work a trauma scene everyone in the scene is on the "first" team. The "first" team takes direction from the director of the episode and a medical technical director who is a real doctor who also went to film school or is an established director also. The Medical Technical Director gives us the script or "sides" for that scene and gives us specific medical instructions illustrating what action we have to do -and on what line in the script. We memorize the lines just like the actors and then everybody rehearses together before we shoot.
For the most part trauma nurses are always in the scene but it depends on how a director shoots and what the editor cuts whether we are seen or not. If a director likes to show all the action in the scene then the viewers see everybody in the scene but if the director wants to focus on the principals then the editor uses close ups of the principals and all you see are our hands going in and out across the screen. Whether you see us or not 7 times out of 10 we are there.
I've seen more gunshots, stab wounds, babies born, blood and guts and unusual wounds and injuries than I care to see in my lifetime. Luckily its Hollywood magic.
Our props department is absolutely amazing. So is the make up department. Everybody meaning each department-wardrobe,props,makeup, hair have worked together for so long that they work together like an amazing team. It's phenomenal the work that gets done in a day. You can tell the difference instantly when you go to work on a different show. We shoot 8 to 10 pages of script a day. Many shows only get through 5-6 pages.
I got there the year George Clooney left. bummer! Everyone still talks extremely positively about him.
So my summer is coming to an end. To celebrate I'm playing in the infamous 6man Manhattan Beach Tournament tomorrow. Several hundred 6 men and 6women teams all dressed up in costumes. Its the largest annual Beach Mardi Gras ever and its alot of fun! Im playing on the BGirlz Team. It a great honor because this is the team Barbra May Olympic Gold Medalist Misty May's Mom used to play on. It'll be fun. Just heard that Karch Kiraly, Singin Smith, Randy Stoklos and others have formed a team. That should be interesting to watch. I will be taking pictures.
Back to school. Back to Work. What a short summer. Stay tuned for upcoming Player interviews. As the volleyball season starts I will be interviewing players around the country getting their personal experiences on their seasons, their travels and their love for the sport.
