High School Notebook: Bubblers welcome girls' volleyball
By Brenda Crowell, August 17, 2006
Ever watch “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” and marvel at how fast Ty Pennington and his team can build a house?
After all, “building” tends to be a lengthy process, so it's amazing that week after week, Pennington & Co. build large dream houses in a span of seven days.
There's something kind of similar going on at Boiling Springs High School, where the Bubblers' girls' volleyball team is about to embark on its first official season in the Mid-Penn. Head coach Mark Smith talks enthusiastically about building a program, but it sounds like the foundation's already laid and the roof's on.
“So far we're looking at 26 girls that I know are trying out,” Smith says. “That's a lot, definitely more than what we need to fill the two squads (varsity and JV).”
About three years ago, according to Boiling Springs athletic director Scott Govern, the school did a survey to see if any girls would be interested in playing volleyball. The response was positive, and the Bubblers' team was born in 2004.
