Auckland, 12pm: Bikinis and speedos might be the norm at any beach volleyball game in the US, Europe or Brazil, but not in Apia, Samoa, the home of thousands of church-going locals.
Competitors in beach volleyball at the South Pacific Games are wearing shorts and cropped sports tops, a far cry from the sexy G-strings Latino players step into when they're primed to spike.
And officials admit they've had to "relax" the rules to allow for the cultural inhibitions of the 22 competing nations.
A volleyball spokesman, Bryan Milikin, says the bikini is the international uniform but officials have had to compromise after many players resisted attempts for them to dress in anything less than shorts. (listen)
