"Ethical volleyball federation" has problems following its own standards

In 2006, the World Volleyball and Beach Volleyball Federation (WVBF) was founded in Copenhagen as an ethical alternative to a corrupt and undemocratic regime in the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB). However, despite a professed commitment to transparency, WVBF will not say who its members are or publish findings from a commissioned ethics report on the breakdown of relations with the beach volley organisation ProSeries last year.

FIVB stops practice that has enriched former president Acosta

The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) is getting ready to shut down a very lucrative financial arrangement that has benefited its former president and current honorary president, Ruben Acosta, for years. FIVB leaders have asked the next World Congress to delete an article in FIVB's financial regulations that says that FIVB members can receive 10 per cent commission on the value of all sponsorship and television contracts they sign on behalf of the organisation.

Beach volleyball players love, hate TV appeal

It's a very dynamic sport and the international rules have been changed for television," said Australia's Natalie Cook, who has competed in every Olympics since beach volleyball joined the Games in 1996 and won the gold medal in Sydney.

In Beijing, the semi-finals and finals will be played in the morning to catch the all-important evening prime time viewing in the United States and Brazil, where beach volleyball has a wide following.

This year, officials have also tightened up the enforcement of a 1999 rule that players must serve within 12 seconds of the last point ending - a decision some players put down to broadcasting needs. (Reuters.com)

"The more time you have between points, the more you can recover from the last point and get some water. It'll be tough on the players in such hot and humid conditions," said Brazil's Renata Ribeiro.

"There's still an element of people thinking it's all about bikinis," said Cook. "But once they actually watch a match, they realize how dynamic and athletic it is so they stay and stop talking about sex."

Apparently beach volleyball is a sexy sport.

I think that beach volleyball is a sexy sport. I've played it enough and I can weigh in on the reactions.

I think in promoting the sport - the "sexiness" is overrated especially to midwestern high school kids -girls in particular trying to decide if they want to play.

There's no denying the skin, the physiques etc. I just think just as much effort could be placed on highlighting the physical ability and skills girls need. In addition to focusing on the benefits of playing volleyball. I don't think those are unrealistic public relations points that can be covered while marketing beach volleyball.
