The AVP Crocs Tour Charleston Open, South Carolina's only professional beach volleyball event, announced Tuesday that it has changed dates to accommodate players pursuing their Olympic dreams in an international qualifying event.
The Charleston Open now will be held May 8-10. It originally had been scheduled for one week later. The event site, the Family Circle Tennis Center on Daniel Island, will not change.
"We felt that changing the dates for the Charleston Open was in the best interests of our players," AVP Commissioner and CEO Leonard Armato said.
"While we strongly believe the AVP Crocs Tour is the premier beach volleyball tour domestically and that playing our events is a top priority for our players, we also understand just how important participating in the Olympics is. The Olympic Games come around only once every four years, and we don't want to do anything to stand in the way of our players chasing their Olympic dreams."
Rescheduling the Charleston Open will allow some of the AVP's top players to compete in the Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) World Tour event in Seoul, Korea, the following week. The tournament is a key Olympic qualifying event, as only the top two U.S. teams in the points standings qualify to represent their country.
