ANDRINA Namatta and Mercy Tabitha will be out to better their advantage when the Pilsener sponsored National Beach Volleyball Circuit 3rd leg gets underway this morning at Lido Beach, Entebbe.

The two are joint top of the women's table with 395 points but Milly Laker (350) is keeping close watch and can take close in in case the table toppers falter.

Experienced Harriet Ssali, Mariam Nakamanya and Shila Omuriwe, who is just back from United States of America (USA are on 300 points and must put up splendid performances today to stand a chance of winning the crown.

Tony Lakony is atop the men's table on 395 points after two rounds of action but must be wary of Amon Ayinebyona, Alex Nduhukire and Hannington Nsubuga who are all tied on 300.

Meanwhile, former players, led by former Uganda Volleyball Federation (UVF) General Secretary Seppi Bamutire, will also converge at the same venue for inaugural veterans gala. Richard Basiima, Charles Odoch, John Oneka, Sam Meya and Henry Mbidde are some of the other veterans in the fray.

Nile Breweries under their flagship brand of Pilsener are sponsoring the National Beach Volleyball Circuit to a tune of Shs25million. The day long event begins in the morning at 9 a.m.

Women's Beach Volleyball in Africa

The women's category witnessed new winners in the names of Diana Agaba and Josephine Nammanda who won the strong pair of Andrina Namata and Mercy Tabitha in the finals on points ratio advantage after they tied 1-1 and play could not continue due to poor light.

Favorite Shilla Omuriwe faltered in her winning ways when she got knocked out at the quarterfinal with new partner Agatha Balidawa by eventual runners up Namata/Tabitha 17-21. Her 2007 regular partner Harriet Ssali failed to make it citing an injury she sustained in the regular league on Saturday. Omuriwe however retains her top position as women’s seed one.

The Sales Manager Nile Breweries, Mr. Lloyd Okiror presided over the prize awarding ceremony in this annual event that attracted a full house of 40 teams at Lido beach resort Entebbe .

The national squad naming shall be finalized this week and published. Next club event is in August 26 th 2007 .

Thai teams dig themselves a big hole

[BEACH VOLLEYBALL] Thailand's top two teams face a do-or-die battle today after failing to get off the mark in the first round of the inaugural Phuket Thailand Open at Karon Beach yesterday.

In the first round of the US$200,000 event, all squads have to record two wins to progress further.
The local girls have one win against one loss but still have a chance to advance to the next round if they win today's play-off matches.

Thailand's No 2 pairing of Yupa Phukrongploy and Usa Tenpaksee had no answer to the powerful spikes of the 2004 Athens Olympics champions, Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor of the US and went down 21-13 21-14. The two-time SEA Games winners, Kamolthip Kulna and Jarunee Sannok, edged out Tatiana Barrerra and Virginie Kadjo of France 21-17 21-19.

However later in the day, Kamolthip and Jarunee fell to the American second seeds Nicole Branagh and Eliane Youngs, 21-17 21-13, while Yupa and Usa kept their hopes of advancing to the second round alive by defeating Sarah Maxwell and Marie Andree Lessard of Canada 21-18 21-16.

Today Kamolthip and Jarunee will meet world No 21 Tamara Larrea Peraza and Dalixia Fernandez Grasset of Cuba, while Yupa and Usa face Merel Mooren and Rebekka Kadijk of the Netherlands.

Meanwhile, the top seeds cruised into the second round after winning their first two matches.

The 2005 World champions Walsh and May-Treanor routed compatriots Rachel Wacholder and Jennifer Boss 21-13 21-16.

China's world No 2 Tian Jia and Wang Jie China beat England's Lucy Boulton and Denise Johns 21-18 21-18 and then trounced Rebekka Kadijk and Merel Mooren of the Netherlands 21-7 21-14.
